How to Find a Gutter Leak Before You Call Anyone
Water dripping off the roofline in a Tulsa rain can be four different problems, and they cost anywhere from $150 to $1,500 to fix. Twenty minutes with a garden hose on a dry day will usually tell you which one you have, and it changes what you ask for when you call.
The four things "my gutter leaks" can mean
- A joint leak. Water drips from a corner, an end cap, or (on sectional gutters) a seam. The gutter is fine; the sealant is not.
- Overflow. Water pours over the front lip in heavy rain. The gutter is full because it cannot drain fast enough. Not a leak at all.
- Water behind the gutter. Water runs down the fascia between the gutter and the house. A roof-edge problem, not a gutter problem.
- A hole. Rare in aluminum, common in old steel: a rust pinhole or a hail puncture drips in any rain, steady, from one spot mid-run.
The hose test
Pick a dry afternoon. You need a hose that reaches the roofline, a helper, and a ladder if you have a single-story home and are comfortable on one. If you do not, the ground-level version still tells you a lot.
Step one: fill the gutter slowly. Put the hose in the gutter at the end farthest from the downspout, on low flow. Watch the downspout. Water should appear at the bottom within a minute. If it does not, the downspout is clogged; that is a flush, not a repair, and it might be the whole problem.
Step two: watch the corners and end caps. With the gutter carrying a steady trickle, walk the run and look under each corner. A drip that starts within a minute or two at a corner is a joint leak. Note which corners.
Step three: fill it faster. Open the hose up. If water starts coming over the front lip while the downspout is running full, you have overflow — the downspout cannot keep up. If it comes over the lip while the downspout is only trickling, the pitch is wrong and water is pooling mid-run.
Step four: look at the fascia. Spray the roof edge just above the gutter. If water shows up on the fascia below the gutter rather than in it, the shingles or drip edge stop short of the gutter and water is going behind it.
Step five: the mid-run drip. A steady drip from the bottom of the gutter away from any joint, appearing in step one on low flow, is a hole.

The Tulsa-specific patterns
South- and west-facing corners fail first. The sealant on the side of the house that gets the afternoon sun bakes through in eight to ten summers. If one corner is dripping, the other corners on the same side are a year or two behind it. Reseal them together; the ladder is already up.
Ice pulls joints apart. A corner that was fine in October and drips in March usually opened when the gutter carried ice in January. The joint moved, the sealant tore. Same fix, but check the hangers on that run while you are at it, because the ice moved them too.
Hail dents look like leaks. After a May storm, a front lip that has been beaten inward holds a puddle that drips over the edge for hours after the rain stops. It reads as a leak. It is a dent, and it belongs on the roof claim. The hail damage page covers how to document it.
Downspout elbows. The most common drip in Tulsa is not the gutter at all. It is the elbow at the top of the downspout, where the strap has rusted or the screws have backed out and the elbow has dropped a half inch. Water sprays out the gap onto the siding. Push it back together, add two screws, done.
What you cannot see from the ground
The hose test finds the leak. It does not tell you whether the fascia behind a corner that has dripped for five years is still solid. Press a screwdriver into the board under the worst corner. If it sinks in, there is rot, and a reseal will fix the drip but not the board. That is a gutter repair visit with fascia on the estimate, and it is the reason we look at every run from a ladder rather than pricing from the driveway.
When to skip the test
Two-story homes, steep lots, or anything that would put the ladder on the gutter itself. The gutter will crush and you will be on the ground.
